So fast - so weekly: security in 2100, a vision

Captain's Logs, 05:08 LST New York Earth Time
On our mission through the new Vulcainian territories on the edge of the Alpha quadrant we've encountered internal problems. It occurs that our ship database fails to reinitialize due a minor power outrage yesterday. Our engineers have tried to reboot multiple times - without success. Microsoft support on earth just supports remote assistance within the Alpha quadrant. It seems we left this territory and subspace calls are not supported. Our navigational controls therefore are still offline.
We have tried to communicate with the Starfleet Navigational-Clound-Cluster - without success. The subspace bandwidth available is not enough to resynchronize the entire information's structure; and there're numerous subspace interferences caused by a near black hole. I assume. Even Google doesn't work, so we aren't even able to open a basic galaxy map; and no one on this ship took local datafiles on this trip.
As it seems sublieutenant Kimm forgot to make backups necessary for a whole database reconstruction. I sent him to the brick for the rest of our journey.
There're further problems. Many crew-members noted that internal COM-messages had Malware document-attachments, that cause hardware console-overloads. The company, Adobe Systems, responsible for this problem is currently out of reach, however similar incidents on earth have already been reported. It seems there's no particular fix for this problem. I have instructed the crew to deactivate meta-scripting to ensure safety and privacy within the ship's internal information.

Still there's no solution for the database problem. Our Windows server wasn't able to synchronize with the remote License server and therefore went offline. So does most software on board. We're simply out of network reach.
A Ferengi ship has offered to trade us software, known as "Software-Cracks". But this is against Starfleet directives and I will not support that.
It seems many crew-members don't share this opinion and if they reinstall their software on earth... I allowed it. Furthermore we bought a star-card.

It seems the Ferengi sold us "Malware". Our ship suddenly started remote-controll services. Of course lieutenant Grimm, responsible for system-security, killed the rogue-processes and started further Malware-analysis after his incident response. I have to admit that he yesterday mentioned something called "Policy".
His own protocols include a lack of general technical skills at our crew members. He furthermore instructed everybody to "think before using technology". As it seems out here we have to be more careful. We're currently in pursuit after the Ferengi. If we find them we will use the ship's phasers.

We found the Ferengi and put them into our brick. They had a real star-card on board and we finally managed to get our database back online. We're on our way back home. We hope. I'm currently unsure whether the computer-systems are manipulated and lead us to a disaster...
